Upper material and stuffing

Any inelastic material. According to the size of a bear choose the appropriate thickness of material. For the teddy bear as in the pictures you will need two types. The material for the body and the other pieces for the inside ears, paws and foot. If you will want teddy bear less and you'll want to decorate differently, these parts can be omitted and use just one material. Always use inelastic woven material, because another would be deformed during stuffing. Usage of material to bear the size of 40 cm is 50 x 70 cm.

For the stuffing can use various stuffing materials - polyester or wool fleece, shredded foam, wood shavings. For this kind of little bodies are suitable to stuff harder, the teddy bear could stay without support and doesn't fall.

bear Mita sitting bear Míťa detail

Home bear Mita

Mita is a classic natural man, where you can see all the seams and which also show the process of getting all the pieces together, so in the end was a bear.

Mita has simply attached limbs by stitching of solid thread, seam is insured by buttons against pulling. Therefore joints are not very durable, if the Mita too much to move, but wooden buttons have a decorative function, giving to Mita a natural look. Such stitching also requires the teddy bear has to be less stuffed. Looks slimmer and is softer for petting.

The steps of work out for both bears

  1. Sew ears and sew them to head darts. The ear is larger parts sewn into darts and shorter part into the middle seam on his forehead, so that the result is the ear looks "bent" at the head. Sew the bottom seam of side parts of the head, it's chin from the nose down. If you create a nose of cloth, attach it now. Then sew the middle part of the head.
  2. If you want to create a teddy bear paws, cut this piece separately by the indicated lines. First, sew the inner parts of the paws, and then the outer parts of hands.
  3. Sew the legs and body parts, leaving holes for the overturning and stuffing.
  4. Sew together head and body and turn body to front side.
  5. Place the inner joints. If you dont want to use inner joint, skip this article.
  6. Stuff and sew up holes.
  7. If you didn't use inner joints, attach by stitch the hands and legs now. Thread joints insure against pulling by buttons, beads, bobble etc.
  8. Create a face by embroidery, applique, buttosn, glass eyes etc.

bear Sam sitting

Ship's cook Sam

Sailor Sam looks more robustly than Mita, but it is only a by choosing other material. Here's bulkier plush and stronger stuffing. When laying pattern on the material, make sure that the plush hair facing downward, then you don't pet the bear "against the grain". Follow the arrow on pattern indicated the warp direction.

This bear is stuffed more than Mita and reliably holds all the positions that you want. Thanks to flat feet and tough joints can stand without support. There are used plastic bookbinding rivets as the joints.
The possibilities of where to get or how to make solid joints for pets we will discuss later in another article.

Sam should have been a gift and I sewed it exactly as wished. I made him in navy blue and moreover I decorated with nautical motives on ears and feet. If you want also decorate teddy bear with embroidery, do it before you start to cut. Pieces redraw, embroider and on the end cut.
